BIMA Dinner – Architecting a Digital Future
David Marks is the entrepreneur and visionary behind The London Eye - the definitive symbol of modern day London and the UK's most popular paid tourist attraction. How did David undertake what seems to be an almost impossible task in the very heart of London? What can we learn from traditional architectural disciplines as we hurtle ever closer to living and working in a virtual world? How do we need to evolve our thinking and approach to ensure that we create long-sustainable digital properties that last the tests of time?
David Marks MBE FRSA RIBA was educated at the International School of Geneva and the Architectural Association in London. After spending 7 years at Richard Rogers and Partners he co-founded Marks Barfield Architects with Julia Barfield in 1984. In 1994 David and Julia founded the London Eye Company. The London Eye demonstrates David’s commitment to innovation and excellence. Getting permission to build the Eye required determination, tenacity and persuasion. Making it happen demonstrated a sophisticated business capability in which the roles of architect, client and entrepreneur were skilfully combined. Locating the Eye opposite the Palace of Westminster challenged the status quo by putting modern architecture in the heart of the city, and choosing the South Bank has shown that a boldness of vision can make a major contribution to regeneration.
As Managing Director of the London Eye Company, David found the partners and raised the finance necessary for the development. Through this venture he developed extensive experience in public and statutory consultation. The London Eye has become the most popular attraction in the UK and is recognised as a new symbol of London and the UK.
In 2000 David was made an MBE in the Queen’s New Years Honours List. He has also received the Prince Philip Special Commendation for Outstanding Achievement in Design for Business and Society.
In 2001 David was awarded the Faculty of Building Trophy for outstanding work in the field of construction, and the practice received The Building Architectural Practice of the Year Award. In 2003 Marks Barfield Architects received the Queens Award for Enterprise (Innovation). From 2002 to 2007 David was Chairman of the Waterloo Project Board, a £19m SRB budget regeneration program in London SE1. In 2007 David was elected a Fellow of the RSA.
