Outline Brief

The brief
The Office of Government Commerce (OGC) is the Treasury-backed agency responsible for promoting best practice, efficiency and better procurement in the public sector. The OGC had expanded its market coverage to include local authorities, health and education and emergency services, as well as central government departments. We were briefed to streamline the existing website and to consider how the OGC’s digital platform could both reach and engage its new target audience.

Outline Work

Our response
It was decided that to increase the efficient dissemination of best practice, the site needed to act as an online resource centre. Further to user research, we developed new design and information architecture to increase usability, including improved navigation and site structure. We wrote over 70 key pages on the site, simplifying the language and communicating OGC’s services more effectively. The technical solution was a large-scale project, involving the development of a content management system, based on the RedDot platform.

The platform includes bespoke wizards to help content owners create their own pages. We also implemented a robust and secure hosting infrastructure. To help the OGC develop the site on an ongoing basis, we produced a definitive and comprehensive style guide for design and content.

Unique Features

The results
The fresh design, writing style and high usability, all help the OGC reach and engage with its new target audience groups online. The site has also encouraged users to self-serve, producing measurable benefits by reducing the workload at the OGC service desk. Since the start of the year the OGC website has had 912,157 visitors and over 2 million files have been downloaded from the site. In addition the website was recently recognized by the Interactive Media Awards with the Outstanding Achievement Award in the category of government websites and also won a RedDot International Award for use of Content Management System.
