Enough Talk, It's Time for Diversity Action

The latest BIMA Breakfast Briefing explored practical steps to improving diversity in the digital workspace.

We should be long past the point of discussing whether diversity is a problem in the workplace. As Trevor, who introduced BIMA’s latest breakfast briefing noted: “that’s just obvious.”

But what isn’t always obvious is where your bias lies, and how to address it. As Roxanne Hobbs, Founder of The Hobbs Consultancy said, even the most liberal of us has some form of (often unconscious) bias. If that makes you feel affronted or uncomfortable (or just curious), take this test.

So this session explored practical ways of addressing diversity in the workplace, the things you can actually do, the tools you can use and the measures you can put in place:

Roxanne explored how to use data to explore the ways bias enters your workplace. · 

Trevor Johnson, Director, Global Agency Partnerships at Facebook revealed the unconscious bias training that’s taking place at Facebook. He also explained how the company wants to earn the right to drive the agenda by working to look more like the communities it serves rather than the traditional Silicon Valley demographic.

Suzy Levy, Managing Director, The Red Plate explored five diversity accelerators that can help lock in success for diversity change programmes. · 

And Nancy Rowe - Digital Strategy and Insight Lead at SapientRazorfish was joined by Roshni Goyate, Co-Founder of The Other Box; Dan Godsall, Founder of Womba and Serhat Ekinci, Director, OMG Ethnic at Omnicom Media Group for a panel discussion and audience Q&A on key diversity topics.
